About the Rogue Saber Academy

What We Do

The Rogue Saber Academy (or RSA) is a tuition free online training school that instructs its students how to fight, spar and duel with the combat LED lightsaber (sold by a new booming online market) through training videos and a student handbook. The “Three Main Forms” taught by the academy are based upon the historic techniques of Kendo, Iaido, Kenjutsu, Olympic Foil, Sabre and Eppee Fencing, H.E.M.A, and more. In order to help students find others with whom to test out their new skills, the Lightsaber Duel Finder system was invented by the RSA’s two co-founders and made available to all students. As students learn, grow and progress, they may advance in rank in the Rogue Order of Knights, a global community service organization comprised of current and alumni students of the RSA and other lightsaber academies. The RSA also provides free resources to Saber Dueling Sport enthusiasts such as a platform on which to host tournaments, rate and review saber creators and vendors (Saber-Smiths) and interact with this fast growing community!

The RSA's Governing Body

Image of the interior of the library of congress USA

The Governing Council (our administrative team of qualified volunteers) meets online occasionally, and by invitation (via Skype) for one hour (or so) to discuss how the RSA and Rogue Order of Knights can improve and vote on new changes or solutions. If a major change or addition to how the RSA runs is determined, an Official Edict will be posted in our School Archives or or it will be announced in an episode of RSA Radio. If an update to our Terms and Conditions is made, all students are notified via our internal messaging system. To become a member of the Governing Council, you must either be known personally by the council members, be invited by a council member to apply, be a member of the Founding Council, or have earned the rank of ‘Master’ in the Rogue Order. (For more information about the Governing Council, feel free to contact the Grandmaster directly.) If you meet one or more of these qualifications, please fill out the application form below for a chance to join us!

Our History and Mission

The Academy Chronicles

Chapter 1: An Ignited Vision

It was the time of "awakening” and the revitalization of a beloved franchise. The already booming combat saber market was flooded with new collectors, and competition among saber-smiths grew fierce. Various private training academies arose that students could visit in person. However, the majority of saber enthusiasts did know of or have access to such academies. This amazing new tool could be purchased, yet most collectors had few practical uses for their sabers, and the search for sparring partners was relegated mostly to random online threads and local clubs.

Therefore, on March 4th 2017, a group of friends (led by the Burks, a husband and wife team) comprised of history teachers, Star Wars fans, martial arts enthusiasts, saber collectors, and others, assembled to do something about it. They are known as the “Founding Council,” and at that historic meeting, their democratic discourse started a chain of events that would soon create a new school! On that day, the school’s “Five Foundational Ideals” were established:

Access to Training: Students who wish to learn how to win duels with a saber, should be able to learn, even if they cannot afford, or are in the vicinity of, formal in-person classes.

Honoring our Heritage: Saber instruction should guide students in creating a link between them and the past. The rich history of dueling should be learned and respected, even in the time of space-age alloys and glowing blades.

Community Growth: Why should a duelist have to practice alone? An online academy should provide resources to aid in finding opponents and rivals while facilitating a culture of friendship and mutual growth. Fellow students will see one another’s accomplishments, climb in rank, and share in their satisfaction.

Self-Refinement: It is impossible to study ancient forms of sword combat without also unearthing the incredible codes of chivalry and honor that traditionally accompanies serious sword instruction. A student should expect to grow in technical prowess, physicality, emotional control and in wisdom.

Realization of Dreams: As students grow and learn, they should be able to see the results of their training. They will win duels, see growth of their inner self, and find increased strength to follow and achieve their worthy goals.

Chapter 2 – Rise of the Order

On April 4th 2017, this Founding Council became the “Governing Council,” and officially founded the Rogue Saber Academy, marking the occasion with an epic speech and the first duel ever to be facilitated through the newly created Duel Finder System! In celebration of this event, and of the amazing saber enthusiast and dueling community, the RSA established the annual “Saber-Day” tradition!

       N. Burk, the lead architect of the Duel Finder System and co-creator of the RSA’s website was elected as the first Grandmaster of the Rogue Order and Academic Administrator of the RSA. His wife, co-creator of the site and the first to reach the Rogue Order’s rank of Master, was also appointed as the Executive Administrator of the academy by the council.

In the following days and weeks, the council met often to vote and refine the school, creating Official Edicts whenever a major change in policy was decided. (These original edicts and more can be viewed here.) In addition, they also combined their creative skills to create the basis of the school’s own lore, morality tales and fan-fictions. After the site was open to beta testing on July 7th, 2017, many of the school’s founders went their separate ways, moving on to other projects. Simultaneously, a few of their friends, and a scattering of those lucky enough to find the site became the school’s first students. Today, the RSA rapidly grows as students increase their skills, schedule duels and spread the word!

What will the next epic chapter of our story tell?
What adventures will be faced by yet unknown heroes?
Now is your chance to join the RSA, climb the ranks of the order and make history!

About our School

School Accreditation and Affiliation

The Rogue Saber Academy’s Lessons in Honor, Dueling Technique Instruction, Meditation Lessons, and other practical skills taught by the academy are primarily based off of, and are largely inspired by, historic Japanese and Medieval European authorities, available to the public in print and online. Very little of our instruction is purely of our own fabrication, but rather represents an amalgamation of teachings from a vast number of masters of the past. (For our curricular acknowledgements and for more information on our sources, we recommend a study of our school’s handbook.)

The RSA an independent online academic institution. It is not yet recognized by, or affiliated with, any other accreditation agency, academic organization or governmental institute of education. The quality of our instruction is primarily manifested through its practical application. We are confident that as a student of the RSA, you will be able to capitalize from centuries of knowledge, handed down by the masters of the past, and win more duels and tournaments with our dueling techniques!

The Rogue Way

Introduction

The “Rogue Way” summarizes some core philosophies of the Rogue Order, and is the school motto of the RSA. It is memorized by all students and read aloud at the commencement every Advancement Ceremony, City Tournament, and at other official events. To learn more about some guiding philosophies behind the RSA, please visit the Rogue Order's Official Page!

The RSA's School Motto

THE ROGUE WAY

We are swordsmen of the Rogue Order.
Through Wisdom, we are tested,
Through Power, we are tempered,
And through Strength we are made true.

We seek harmony and growth.
We are guided by the code.
As masters of the saber,
We wander,
We duel,
We improve.

This is the Rogue Way.

Our Robot Staff

To celebrate our fandom of the amazing Star Wars franchise which inspired the main weapon of our new favorite sport, (and to give our governing council much needed support) three unique artificial intelligence programs were created, named, and integrated into to the site’s coding. You’ll come across their avatars as you maneuver through the academy. Just for fun, you can learn a little more about them here!

KR-AD8

Known to the older students as “Cranky-Eight,” KR-AD8 is in charge of academy cyber security and school rule enforcement. If you try to cut corners while filling out a form, he’ll be there! If you try to illegally increase your number of Duel Credits – his error messages will stop you in your tracks. He may seem polite, but his tone is often sarcastic and condescending. We think that has something to do with how many arms he’s had to repair or replace after sparring with new students…

BB-14

Her red, blue and silver colors match those of the RSA! Buzzing and rolling about our school is the kind-hearted BB-14. She has gone past her good-natured programing to become a beacon of contagious optimism. School Operations and Diagnostics are BB-14’s duties. You’ll receive many automated emails, alerts and notifications from our resident Platinum-Pollyanna.

R2-B9 Series Droids

New Students of the Rogue Saber Academy are given a unique gift just after registration – their very own R2-B9! This helpful robot has been granted access to all RSA databases and code and is here to help you with anything you need. If you are lost, want to know how to find something, are confused about a rule or procedure, or just feel like chatting with a friendly AI – don’t hesitate to visit your own robot as often as you like! This robot responds to typed commands, and can even remember a great deal from past conversations.
